Recently, I was commissioned to bring Lucille Clifton 's poem "poem on my fortieth birthday to my mother who died young" to life.
I really like Lucille Clifton but wasn't familiar with this 1980 poem in which she addresses her dead mother as she approaches the age at which her mother died. I considered writing my Master's thesis on the theme of forgetting in Lucille Clifton and Audre Lorde's poetry, so spending about 12 hours carving a memorial poem was really interesting! Altogether, this is about 18 hours of work and was a lot of (very fiddly) fun.
